Welcome to Costa Rica!  Your journey begins with a flight into San Jose, the capital city.  The city of San Jose is the national capital and economic center.  It is currently undergoing rapid changes with pedestrian streets and modern high rise buildings yet it maintains much of it past multicultural heritage in restored elegant buildings, historic statues and parks.

After being welcomed by a guide at the airport, we will have a welcome dinner at the local home with traditional food prepared in a wood-fire kitchen.

San Jose

Cross-cultural nursing exchange

Local dinner with Costa Rican dance presentation

Today we will visit San Jose University for a cross-cultural nursing exchange (CE CREDIT).  We will meet with local nurses and learn about the work that they do, the resources that are available to them and the healthcare system in Costa Rica.

For family members not participating in nursing exchange, we have recommendations for kid-friendly activities.

In the evening, we will have dinner at a local restaurant with a presentation of typical dance in Costa Rica.

Travel to Sarapiqui

Guided visit at La Selva Research Station

Today, we travel to Sarapiqui, a lush green province in northern Costa Rica.  It is known for outdoor adventure and relaxing scenery.  We will conduct a tree planting activity to compensate for the carbon dioxide produced during our travel.  Then, lunch and a guided visit through La Selva Research Station.  Presentation will include discussion of traditional medicinal plants in Costa Rica (CE CREDIT).

Guided evening night walk or free night

After breakfast, we will meet with rural local nurses in the community.  We will complete a service project at a local school or clinic.  This cultural exchange will include a short presentation by our team on a topic of our choice (CE CREDIT).

Non-nurses can either stay and explore the lodge or venture out on kid-friendly activities suggested by our guides.

After lunch, we will rejoin the travelling parties and enjoy a chocolate tour, learn about chocolate from its indigenous roots and visit a plantation in the rain forest.  The tour begins by with a heart pounding suspension bridge over the Sarapiqui River into the cloud forest where a variety of wildlife can be spotted.

In the evening, your family can choose a night walk through the rain forest searching for wildlife or a free evening to explore.

Arrive at Arenal Volcano

Stop at Juanilama Agro Ecological Community

Evening in the healing hot springs

On our way to the Arenal Volcano, we will stop at the Juanilama Agro Ecological Community, a sustainable farm where we will learn about agriculture, farm to table, have a cooking lesson and eat lunch.  We will have the chance to milk the cow, learn about cheese making and taste local coffee.

You can see the Arenal Volcano steaming continuously from a distance above the beautiful green rolling farmlands, small town centers and vast forests.  This picturesque region offers natural beauty, amazing wildlife and plenty of outdoor activities.

In the evening, we will enjoy dinner and then a soak in the healing natural hot springs (CE CREDIT).

Arenal Volcano

Discussion with local nurses

After breakfast, we will meet up with Rainforest Explorers, who will take through the rain forest on a safari float looking for lizards, monkeys, birds, sloths and beautiful scenery.

We will have the opportunity to hike down the La Fortuna waterfall.  Located in a small canyon surrounded by lush forest, the 200-foot waterfall is accessible via a trail.

In the evening, we will have a home cooked Costa Rican meal with local nurses (CE CREDIT).  We can also take in a salsa lesson.
